A jewel of early Languedoc Romanesque art, this sanctuary founded at the beginning of the 9th century is one of the most important spiritual and cultural sites in Languedoc. The founding of the Benedictine Abbey of Gellone in 804 is part of the region’s historical and religious background. In the 10th century, when Guilhem became Saint-Guilhem, the spiritual influence of Gellone was confirmed and the monastery became a favourite stopping point on the Way of St James. In 1998, Gellone Abbey was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site as part of the Way of St James in France.
