A world of rock, white water and dazzling lights, the Grand Site de France Gorges de l'Hérault is a mosaic of grandiose and unspoiled landscapes, conducive to wonder and rejuvenation. Descending from the Cévennes, in the Séranne massif, near the Pic Saint-Loup, the Hérault river has carved wild gorges, both green and mineral. In the Languedoc Piedmont, it leads to the Devil's Bridge on a vast plain, where vines and olive trees reign.
At the heart of the Grand Site de France, the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert has been home to the remarkable Gellone Abbey since the 9th century, which will shine over a myriad of medieval towns, churches, chapels and bridges on the way to Saint- Jacques-de-Compostelle. Today, the Devil's Bridge and Gellone Abbey, emblematic landmarks of the Camino d'Arles, are listed as World Heritage by UNESCO under the Ways of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostela in France.
A haven of spirituality and a favorite spot for nature lovers, the Hérault gorges have inspired men for thousands of years, who here perpetuate traditions and know-how: potters, glassmakers, winegrowers, olive growers, farmers ...
The Grand Site de France label, renewed in 2018 over a scope extended to ten municipalities, recognizes the quality of the sustainable development approach carried out by the communities of municipalities of Grand Pic St Loup, Vallée de l'Hérault and Cévennes Gangeoises et Suménoises and their partners.
